The Chatwal New York

Quietness: ★★★★★

How do you find a good night of sleep in New York City, the city that never sleeps? The answer is, you don’t—at least not easily. I endured many restless nights in New York, interrupted by sirens, garbage trucks, and even the building’s own plumbing—until I discovered The Chatwal New York. Just steps away from Times Square and Broadway, this boutique hotel feels like an oasis at the very heart of the Big Apple.

Previously a club house built in the early 1900’s, The Chatwal New York is named after the Chatwal family, the owner of the Hampshire Hotels. It offers spacious guest rooms (by New York standards) and magnificent suites. The hotel boasts their butler service, though I didn’t make use of it.

Quietness: The property fronts a narrow, one-way street that naturally limits traffic noise. Once inside the hotel, you are immediately insulated from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

The room I stayed in was one of the smaller guest rooms, yet it still impressed me. It was beautifully decorated in a modern Art Deco style, complete with a sleek lounge chair. With its mirrored walls and glossy reflective black marble, the bathroom can feel disorienting, as though you’ve wandered into a house of mirrors with endless reflections. The heated TOTO toilet seat is also a rare find in American hotels.

The Chatwal was part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection for many years, until it moved to Hyatt’s The Unbound Collection in 2023.

Conclusion: if you are willing to spend in a luxury hotel, the Chatwal New York will not disappoint you with its quietness, the Art Deco décor and luxurious touches everywhere.
